“ 五十六世紀人たちのしゃべる言葉は、長い場合は猛烈にはやかった。――まるで昆虫の翅音のようにしかきこえない。一つ一つの単語をゆっくりきかせてもらうと、その中には二十一世紀の言葉が、猛烈に簡略化され変形されて、かすかな痕跡をのこしていることがわかるが、とてもききとれたものではない。その上、彼らの言語系の中には、数式や数字の概念が、たくさんとりいれられていて、とてもついていけたものではなかった。――日常の会話は、まったく静粛で、言葉すくなかった。というよりは、大脳前頭葉が二十一世紀人にくらべて極度に発達した彼らは、ほんの短い、間投詞のような言葉を投げかけあうだけで、ほとんどの意味が通じてしまうらしかった。しかし、長い議論になると、鳥のさえずりのような、せせらぎのようなせわしない声があたりにみちた。――彼が発見しておどろいたのは、五十六世紀人たちは、会話が熱をおびてくると、しばしば二人ないしそれ以上の人たちが、同時にしゃべりまくるということだった。最初はそれが受け答えになっているのかと思ったが、そうではないらしく、めいめいの人間は、相手のいっていることなどきかず、猛烈なスピードで自分の考えをしゃべりつづけ、相手のしゃべりつづけている話のうち、ほんの一つ二つの単語なりフレーズなりで、なにかこちらが展開している思考にヒントとなるようなものがあれば、それが相手方の展開している思考系列のなかで、どういう順序、または意味で組みこまれているかということとは関係なく、それをこちらの思考の流れにとりいれて、また新たな方向へ、自分の考えを展開していくらしかった。――つまり、彼らの議論とは、めいめいが相互に情報発信源になってのべつ発振し、何かめいめいにとってそのなかで、瞬間的に共鳴する情報だけがコミュニケートすればいいのであって、相手の考えを全面的［＃「全面的」に傍点］に理解する必要はなかったのだ。にもかかわらず、そのやり方は、相互に共鳴し、コミュニケートする情報が、ある確率［＃「確率」に傍点］でもって整理されていくことによって、りっぱに――むしろいちいち言葉の厳密さをたしかめて、煉瓦《れんが》のように論理を構築していく古いやり方より、よっぽど効率よく――相互の思考を進展させ、同時にめいめいがちがった側面において、新しい問題に達することによって、ひろがりを深めていくのだった。
